From Clicks to Meaningful Visits: What Google’s Drop Teaches Us

Blogpost - Advertiser Insights

In digital advertising, not all clicks are created equal. While clicks may look impressive in reports, what really matters is whether they turn into engaged visits — people actually spending time on your site, exploring content, and taking action.

That’s why many advertisers were surprised when, from July 2025 onward, Google Demand Gen’s performance shifted dramatically. Click-to-session rates, once steady at 30–55%, suddenly collapsed to just 1–8%. The shift was linked to Google’s move from click optimization to “engaged session” optimization, combined with stricter GA4 definitions, tracking gaps from cookie consent and site speed, and broader algorithmic and seasonal shifts.

The lesson is clear: optimizing for clicks alone is no longer enough. Advertisers need to measure and optimize for true engagement.

This is where alternative platforms become essential. At Project Agora, we’ve seen Realize, Taboola’s new, powerful ad platform, consistently outperform in this area, delivering around a 66% click-to-session rate — several times higher than Google’s recent benchmarks. Importantly, engagement is measured through a 40-second on-site pixel, a far more reliable signal of user attention than a simple page load.

Beyond numbers, the implications for advertisers are strategic. Reliable engagement means:

  • Better use of budgets: Paying for attention, not empty clicks.
  • Higher conversion potential: Real visitors are more likely to become real customers.
  • Smarter audience strategies: Control over interest segments, retargeting, and decision-maker targeting ensures reach goes where it matters.

The broader takeaway? The industry is moving into a new era where engagement quality defines performance. Clicks, once the main currency, are no longer sufficient. Advertisers who adapt early — by focusing on meaningful user interactions and diversifying beyond search and social — will be best positioned to thrive.

At Project Agora, our role is to help brands and agencies navigate this transition. With tools like Realize and a commitment to performance-driven innovation, we see a future where engagement isn’t just measured, but scaled.
